As medical technology continues to improve, 體外受精 has become one of the most common ways to help couples who have difficulty getting pregnant.
Besides IVF procedures, success rates, and costs, many people also ask, “Can I choose my baby’s gender?”
In this article, we’ll answer this common question and explain some basic facts about IVF to help you better understand the process.
What Is IVF?
體外受精 is a fertility treatment that helps people become pregnant.
During IVF, a woman’s eggs are collected and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. After fertilization, the embryos are grown for several days before one healthy embryo is transferred into the uterus, where it can hopefully develop into a healthy baby.
Can You Choose Your Baby’s Gender with IVF?
Some families may hope to have a baby of a specific gender for personal reasons.
Today, doctors can identify an embryo’s gender through Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A, formerly called PGS) before the embryo is transferred.
However, whether you are allowed to choose your baby’s gender depends on the laws of each country. In many countries, gender selection is only allowed for medical reasons.
When Is Gender Selection Allowed?
To Prevent Genetic Diseases
Some genetic diseases mainly affect boys or girls.
For example, hemophilia mainly affects males. In these cases, doctors may recommend selecting embryos of a certain gender to reduce the risk of passing on the disease.
When the Law Allows It
Some countries, including certain states in the United States, allow intended parents to choose their baby’s gender for non-medical reasons, as long as the treatment is provided by a licensed fertility clinic.
Can You Choose Gender in Taiwan?
According to Taiwan’s Artificial Reproduction Act, parents cannot choose their baby’s gender for personal preference.
The only exception is when there is a medical reason, such as preventing certain inherited diseases like hemophilia or color blindness. In these situations, genetic testing may be used to identify the embryo’s gender and reduce the risk of passing on the disease.
What About Surrogacy in the United States?
For surrogacy in the United States, PGT-A testing is commonly performed before embryo transfer to check the chromosomes and help reduce the risk of genetic abnormalities. It also helps improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy for both the surrogate and the baby.
Because the embryo’s gender is known during this testing process, intended parents may legally choose the embryo’s gender in states where gender selection is permitted.
為何選擇陽光國際生育及代理孕母中心?
Although surrogacy in the United States costs more than in many other countries, many families still choose the U.S. because of its advanced medical technology, strong legal protection, and comprehensive healthcare system.
Qualified surrogates in the U.S. must complete medical exams, psychological evaluations, background checks, and have a history of healthy pregnancies. Since qualified surrogates are carefully selected, there may be a waiting period after embryos are created.
