With advances in medical technology, Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) has become a common test in IVF treatment. However, many people still have questions about PGS. Is it necessary? How does it work? Who should consider this test?

In this article, Sunshine Surrogacy will explain everything you need to know about PGS testing.

What Is PGS?

PGS, also known as PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy), is a test used to check an embryo’s chromosomes before implantation.

It helps doctors find out whether an embryo has the correct number of chromosomes. PGS is commonly used during IVF treatment to help select embryos for transfer.

Why Is PGS Important?

Chromosome abnormalities may cause genetic conditions, affect pregnancy, or increase the risk of miscarriage.

Some common chromosome conditions include:

  • Down Syndrome
  • Turner Syndrome
  • Klinefelter Syndrome
  • Edwards Syndrome
  • Patau Syndrome

PGS testing helps doctors select embryos with normal chromosome results and may reduce the risk of miscarriage.

PGS may be recommended for people who:

  • Are women aged 35 or older.
  • Have experienced two or more miscarriages.
  • Have had several unsuccessful IVF treatments.
  • Have a family history of chromosome abnormalities.

However, PGS is not necessary for everyone. Doctors will recommend testing based on each person’s health and fertility condition.

How Does PGS Testing Work?

1. Medical Consultation and Examination

The doctor will review your medical history, check your health, and recommend a suitable treatment plan.

2. Egg Retrieval and Sperm Collection

Eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries, and a sperm sample is collected from the man.

3. Fertilization and Embryo Development

The eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory to create embryos. The embryos are then cultured for several days.

4. Embryo Biopsy

After 5 to 6 days, a small number of cells are taken from the embryo for testing.

5. 基因檢測 (PGS/PGT-A)

The collected cells are sent to a laboratory to check whether the embryo has the correct number of chromosomes.

6. Embryo Selection and Transfer

Based on the test results, doctors select a suitable embryo for transfer.

PGS may help improve embryo selection, but it cannot guarantee pregnancy success or a healthy baby.

Is PGS Required for Surrogacy in the United States?

PGS testing is commonly used in surrogacy programs in the United States to help select embryos before transfer.

Some fertility clinics require embryos to pass PGS testing before they can be transferred to a surrogate mother.

However, PGS is not required by law for every surrogacy case in the United States. Each fertility clinic may have different requirements.

Some clinics only accept embryos with normal chromosome results, while others may consider mosaic embryos after medical evaluation.

PGS testing can also identify an embryo’s chromosomal sex. Depending on the clinic’s policies, intended parents may be able to learn the baby’s sex before embryo transfer.
